“I am literal proof you can make things better despite your past.”
“Should I not mention your record?,” I ask, gauging the level of transparency Genny will share for an FLS spotlight. “Put it in there!,” she exclaims, going one step further: “I want to be a motivation to the other single moms that you don’t have to be held back! I’m literal proof you can make things better for yourself despite your past when you put in a lot of work and prayer!”
Genny’s not shy about her story. In fact, this hard-working mom, who is raising a daughter with special needs, is not shy about much at all–a trait that for years kept her from connecting with FLS’ outreach to single moms, Women of Courage (WOC). She feared her big personality, spicy humor, and frank “say it like it is” approach wouldn’t fit in Christian circles.But after attending her first WOC meeting, she couldn’t wait to go back. Despite the tough road behind her—the criminal convictions were 20 years ago—Genny says she “felt no judgement ever,” insisting, “I’ve made the best friends with the most amazing women who allow me to be myself.” Amid this safe circle, her budding faith grew. Along with her daughter, Genny found not only crucial support, but joy.
Then a job loss and an urgent need to move challenged Genny’s faith. Her bolstered prayer life, community, and WOC mentor helped her hang on. Genny soon applied for a Rocky Mountain Land Trust loan—a selective program for low-income residents—and began a new career path.
After much prayer and God’s unmistakable work, Genny became a homeowner! She bursts with gratitude for this financial dream come true, the miracles, and the FLS community that have helped her to trust God and become the stable head of her household, equipped to meet her family’s needs.
