The Family Life Services Story

Our Mission

The ongoing mission of Family Life Services is to provide single parents and their children with spiritual and emotional healing through counseling, mentoring and training in a secure environment.

Where We've Been

Family Life Services began as an orphanage in 1942, when the main house, a turn-of-the-century Victorian home, was purchased and donated to the orphanage by Carroll and Dorothy Brown. At that time the directors of the orphanage, John and Nan Walden, moved into the residence with the 34 children they had been caring for in their home on N. Weber. Over the years, other buildings were added to the 2.5-acre property, making it possible to house more homeless children in a safe, Christian environment.

By the 1970’s the foster care program made orphanages obsolete, and Family Life Services began changing its focus to the housing and counseling of families. Since 1989, our focus has been to provide residential facilities and counseling for single moms and their kids as well as a Biblical counseling program for people from the community.

Who We Are Today

Today Family Life Services provides comfortable, low-fee quarters to 8 single moms and their children, along with support groups, licensed counseling, and one-on-one Bible study mentoring—all designed to assist the women and children who live here to move toward financial and emotional stability and spiritual wholeness. Residents may stay a maximum of two years and must be actively setting and meeting goals in order to remain in the program.

While our main focus is on our residential families, we also reach out to as many hurting single-parent families in the community as possible through counseling and mentoring programs. These services are provided by our trained staff and by countless dedicated volunteers.

Family Life Services has been about the business of helping children and families for 65 years, and has been focusing on helping single moms get back on their feet for 19 years.

Where We're Going

As our Board of Directors prays about the future of this ministry, our hearts are being turned once again toward ministering to entire families in terms of the counseling and healing opportunities we offer. We are also considering expanding our physical facilities in order to provide homes and services to more families, and would like to support our growing children’s ministry by building a new activities building. These and other goals make this an exciting and pivotal time in the life of our ministry.
